Oak Says - The Meaning Behind The Name
Why Oak Says?
If you’ve ever landed here and paused for a moment, just long enough to wonder,
“Why this name?”
Why Oak Says, and not something more obvious like The Mindful Notebook or Thoughts & Musings or some clever play on “soulful scribbles”?
I’ve asked myself that too, many times.
And every time, I circle back to this quiet, strong image of an oak tree.
Not because it’s trendy.
Not because it’s poetic.
Because it feels like the truth.
What the Oak Means to Me?
The Oak, to me, is ancient and steady. It doesn’t rush, doesn’t show off. It knows who it is and has nothing to prove.
Growing up, I used to imagine trees had personalities. The neem outside my window was grumpy but loyal. The gulmohar down the street was flamboyant, always dressed in red. And the oak—though I hadn’t seen one in real life—felt like the wise one. The one who’d seen things and still chose silence over noise.
Years later, when I stumbled across mythologies and spiritual texts, it surprised me how many cultures held the oak sacred.
To the Greeks, it belonged to Zeus.
To the Norse, to Thor.
To the Druids, it symbolised strength and connection to the divine.
Even the Bible refers to people of unwavering faith as “Oaks of Righteousness.”
What all that told me was: the Oak isn’t just a tree. It’s a symbol.
For endurance.
For rootedness.
For speaking only when something’s truly worth saying.
Why “Says”?
Because I didn’t want this space to shout.
I didn’t want to call it “Writes” or “Speaks” or “Declares.”
Oak Says feels quieter. More thoughtful.
Like when someone turns to you after a long silence and says just one thing—and it lands.
That’s the energy I wanted here.
Not performative wisdom, but presence.
Not noise, but meaning.
Why Not Someone Else’s Name?
Sure, I could’ve picked Buddha Says, or Gandhi Says. But this blog isn’t about channelling a historical figure.
It’s not about aspiring to be perfect.
It’s about being real, steady, sometimes uncertain, and still showing up with something to offer.
The Oak, unlike people, doesn’t come with expectations or ideals.
It just is.
And I wanted a name that gave me—and you—that kind of room to breathe.
What is This Space meant To Be?
I hope Oak Says gives you what the tree offers in its stillness:
-
Shelter when the world feels too loud.
Strength when your own feels like it’s thinning.
-
A place to root, before you rise.
Because writing, at its best, is not just something to read.
It’s something to return to.
Like the Oak.
So sit for a while. Read.
Let the noise settle.
Let the words speak.
This is what the Oak says.
And maybe, just maybe—
It’s what you needed to hear.
And if you’ve been coming back here for a while now, maybe this explains why it’s always felt familiar. Grounded. Safe. Like a tree you didn’t plant, but always find shade under.
With roots,
Afreen Fatima
